SEGMENTS

Crowding out the Trees / Betsy Bayha

Summer has arrived and frugal-minded, ecology-conscious vacationers are foregoing traditional amusement parks for the real thing: national parks. But their increasing numbers are wearing on the parks' resources and increasing pollution and traffic in the fragile park environments. Betsy Bayha reports on the effects on one of America's most famous and most vulnerable national parks: Yosemite. ()

Filling the Forest / Carol Rissman

How crowded is too crowded when you're talking about a national forest? Two popular New England parks have people waiting in line to get in, but both have different mandates. Acadia works on allowing anyone the chance to get in; at Baxter State Park the wait can be for months and the park is hardly user-friendly. Carol Rissman reports on how roughing it has never been so difficult to do. ()
