New Amazon Reserves Anger Brazilians / David Welna

NPR's David Welna reports on Brazilian President Fernando Collor's plan to set aside millions of acres of land as protected reserves for several of the country's native tribes. Environmentalists and Native-rights advocates abroad are pleased, but many Brazilians are furious. (05:31)

Filipinos Wrestle With Illegal Logging / Teresa Albor

Teresa Albor reports on the aftermath of last month's deadly flood in the Philippines. The flood killed 6,000 people and has been attributed to years of illegal logging. It has unleashed a torrent of debate throughout the country over logging and corruption. (09:00)

Malaysia to Environmentalists: Get Lost

Steve talks with NPR's John McChesney about the problems that some Western activists are causing for Malaysian environmentalists. Civil disobedience by a few Westerners against logging operations has led to cries of "environmental colonialism" from the government. McChesney recently returned from Malaysia. He says many local activists are politely asking their Western brethren to take their actions elsewhere. (06:40)
