SEGMENTS

US Pesticides in Costa Rica / Bob Carty

Bob Carty reports on the problems associated with the widespread and often uncontrolled use of American-made pesticides in Costa Rica. Two thousand banana plantation workers are suing three American companies in a Texas court, charging that they were made sterile by negligent exposure to the pesticide DBCP. (17:28)

Breaking the "Circle of Poison"

Steve talks with Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, sponsor of a bill to ban the export of pesticides which are made in the US but illegal to use here. Leahy, who chairs the Senate agriculture committee, says many of these pesticides harm overseas workers and their residues can remain on food imported to the US. (04:05)
