The Economics of Deforestation in Brazil / Bob Carty

Bob Carty reports from the Brazilian northeast on the domestic and international forces that are driving the widespread destruction of Brazil's Amazon rainforest. The region embodies many of the historical conflicts between environmental protection and economic development, which will be the focus of a major UN conference next month in Rio de Janeiro. (14:32)

Better No Treaty on Forests than a Bad One

Steve talks with Tan Sri Razali Ismail, the Malaysian ambassador to the United Nations, about Malaysia's refusal to sign onto a international treaty on forest preservation. Malaysia and several other countries blocked the treaty which was scheduled to be signed at next month's UN Earth Summit in Brazil. Razali says the treaty was too narrowly focused on tropical regions and put too great a burden on developing countries. (06:37)
